what’s in season?
I ran across a recipe in my lastest cookbook purchase… the recipe is inconsequential. However, the main problem I see with the recipe is that it is not seasonable.
One of my biggest pet peeves with recipe creation is that sometimes they don’t focus on what is in season. Several years back, I was having a few friends over for dinner. I had a strawberry shortcake recipe on my menu. In April. I went to a local upscale grocer and was dismayed to find no strawberries. Actually I was pissed.
I now realize that I was the problem, not the store. Strawberries taste like shit in April. But now you can find strawberries year-round. From Chile or some other place that is 2,000 miles away.
Which is better… having strawberries readily available year-round that are a shadow of themselves? Or, waiting until the the perfect window for spectacular, bursting, sweet strawberries?
Anticipation is the greatest thing in life. I’ll wait for the window.
